We are delighted to launch...

From the unstripy poo of a Zebra, to the pungent pong of a piggy’s poo, this little book of pooetry rhymes about it all. And if you’ve ever pondered

where a mole does his business or what a pigeon gets up to on the London Underground, then this collection of hilarious pooems is just for you.

Whilst this little book is full of fun and humour, there is of course a serious side to poo. For instance, poo can tell us a great deal about an animal’s health and well-being, and scientists within the Zoo and veterinary community rely heavily on poo for their research purposes.

The rest of the time though, poo can be just plain funny, and little children everywhere cannot resist the temptation to shoehorn a bit of toilet humour into their everyday vocabulary and conversations!

I had enormous fun writing my pooems... I sincerely hope you have as much fun reading them.

My first attempts at writing verse came at a very early age when I would compose funny little rhymes for friends and family to celebrate birthdays and special occasions.

Inspired by traditional nursery rhymes and limericks, I enjoyed writing my own versions with a somewhat irreverent twist!

I studied graphic design for four years at

Portsmouth College of Art and Design where I discovered I wasn’t a graphic designer – I was an illustrator at heart. Having had a great interest in butterflies for many years, I began painting studies of them in their natural surroundings. After leaving College I freelanced for a couple of years exhibiting my paintings and taking on commissioned work.

For the past fifteen years I have worked as an Early Years Practitioner. During the last four years I have been writing a blog which chronicles life in my classroom through humorous stories, illustrations and rhymes totally inspired by the funny things the children say and do.

I’m a passionate walker. I walk every day on the Downs where I live in Ventnor on the Isle of Wight. It is whilst walking on these beautiful downs that I conjure up my stories and poems.

“Poo has never been so charming as in this collection of poems and delightful illustrations.

Every toilet, private or public, should have a shelf

with a copy of Pooems on it!”

Daniel Roberts – co-founder of the National Poo Museum (nationalpoomuseum.org)

“Pooems, written and beautifully illustrated by Nicola Winsland, could easily prompt the authors of the Oxford English Dictionary to coin a new entry into the nation’s vocab – poomour. For this is what this book is mostly about, lavatorial laughs and it could well make you – and especially your kids – do just that. Like a drain.”

Richard Wright – News Feature Editor

(Isle of Wight County Press)

"The British obsession with poo jokes can be traced back to the very point at which man started writing things down and Pooems is part of that long tradition. This is a good clean read and small children in particular will love the variety of clever pictures set against each pooem. One pooem would be amusing enough, but what a delight it is to find a book that is so full of them!”

Stephen Bolwell - artist, author, BBC wildlife cameraman, photographer and film maker.
